Shine where you are—because that is exactly where God wants His light to be revealed.
During the creation story, God brought light into existence by His spoken word: “Let there be light”—and there was light (Genesis 1:3). But in our time, God is not going to speak light into our families, communities, and nations in the same way He did at the dawn of creation. Instead, God has placed you and me in these very families and communities to be the light.
Many times we wonder why God allowed us to be born into families marked by darkness—families struggling with witchcraft, poverty, immorality, conflict, or cycles of frustration. We ask, “Why did God put me here?” But the truth is this: He put us there because He wants us to bring light and life into those broken situations.
God sends His children into dark places because light shines brightest in darkness (John 1:5).
Therefore, instead of complaining about the darkness around us, we are called to start shining. Jesus Himself said,
“You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14)
And how do we shine this light?
Christ gives us the answer:
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
This means that doing good works under the influence of His grace is how we shine forth the light we carry. When we love, forgive, serve, uplift, and live righteously, the light of Christ within us breaks into the darkness around us.
So instead of asking why God placed you in a difficult family or a troubled community, recognize this:
You were placed there on purpose.
You are God’s light-bearer.
You are the answer God sent into that darkness.
Shine where you are—because that is exactly where God wants His light to be revealed.
